Pyrmont Point Park Sculpture Pyrmont, NSW

X Marks the Spot

The newly created Pyrmont Point Park, as it was called in 1998 (now Pirrama Park), was established for the growing residential population in Pyrmont.

Much of the park evokes memories of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour. Previous uses included shipping and a harbour-side swimming pool.

‘X marks the spot’ was a public sculpture proposal to the memory of the disappearing working harbour life on Sydney Harbour, particularly shipping. Four 20 feet long shipping containers are assembled to form a large X, marking a playfully reminder of the activities of Sydney’s working harbour. The scale reinforces the power and volume of commercial shipping that has passed into Sydney by ship. The containers are illuminated at night reflecting bright colours painted on the inside.
